Guillermo de los Reyes
Declaração
My vision as a member of the LASA Executive Council is to strengthen the Association as a truly global, inclusive, and forward-looking intellectual community. LASA plays a vital role in fostering dialogue across borders, disciplines, and generations, and I am committed to advancing its mission of promoting rigorous scholarship, defending academic freedom, and amplifying diverse voices from Latin America and beyond.
As a Life Member of LASA for several years, I have been deeply engaged in its intellectual and organizational life. I have served in multiple capacities, including as Chair and Secretary/Treasurer of the Sexualities Section, and I have also contributed financially to LASA to support scholarships, particularly for students and early-career scholars. These commitments reflect my long-standing dedication to strengthening LASA as a space that not only produces knowledge but also actively invests in the next generation of researchers.
As Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston, I bring extensive administrative experience in strategic planning, governance, and international collaboration. My professional networks across both the United States and Latin America position me to help LASA foster deeper cross-regional partnerships, expand opportunities for scholarly exchange, and enhance its visibility and impact worldwide.
If elected, I will work to expand LASA’s support for emerging scholars, deepen collaborations across disciplines and regions, and ensure that the Association continues to be a space where critical debates on gender, sexuality, race, migration, human rights, and cultural production flourish. I will also advocate for transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance, recognizing the need for LASA to adapt to the challenges of our times, including digital transformations, global inequities, and threats to academic freedom.
Ultimately, I see service on the Executive Council as an opportunity to help ensure that LASA remains not only the largest but also the most dynamic, representative, and engaged scholarly association devoted to Latin America.
