Se dice con frecuencia que a la opinión pública peruana no le interesa la política exterior. Por ejemplo, en el contexto de una campaña previa a una elección presidencial, salvo alguna mención en los planes de gobiernos, lo internacional no es parte importante del debate, demostrando el poco interés del electorado por estos temas. Recuerdo que el 2006, la ratificación del TLC con Estados Unidos fue el único tema de relevancia internacional para Alan García y Ollanta Humala; mientras que el 2011, el futuro del proceso con Chile ante la Corte Internacional de Justicia de La Haya fue probablemente el gran tema en materia de política exterior. No obstante, esto es relativo.
