The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) reiterates its rejection of the political repression against Cuban historian and editor Alina Bárbara López Hernández and anthropologist Jenny Pantoja Torres. López Hernández, a member of LASA, and Pantoja Torres were harassed by state security agents in April and June of this year as they attempted to travel to Havana to participate in peaceful protests. Jenny Pantoja was subsequently fired from the University of Medical Sciences in Havana. This is the second time that LASA condemns the persecution of Dr. López Hernández, the first being in December 2023.
LASA reiterates its position in defense of freedom of expression and academic freedom, which are essential for the serious and rigorous intellectual and academic work that both Latin American and Cuban society demand. Likewise, we condemn the political persecution against Professors López Hernández and Pantoja Torres, as well as against anyone who freely expresses their opinions or political options, even if they do not agree with the country's leadership. Finally, LASA expresses its solidarity with all victims of political repression in Cuba.
